Telangana Government Plans to Procure 10 New Six-Coach Metro Trains at an Estimated Cost of ₹600 Crore; Daily Ridership Could Rise to 6 Lakh
Hyderabad: In a major relief for Hyderabad Metro passengers, the Telangana government, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, has approved plans to procure new metro trains to address the growing problem of overcrowding during peak hours. The decision is expected to improve passenger convenience, increase carrying capacity and make daily commuting more comfortable for thousands of people travelling across Hyderabad.
The government is preparing to invite tenders for the procurement of new metro trains, which will be introduced in phases. The proposed expansion is aimed at strengthening the city’s public transportation infrastructure and meeting the rising demand for metro services.
10 New Six-Coach Trains to Be Introduced
As part of the first phase of the expansion, the government plans to procure 60 metro coaches and introduce 10 new trains, each consisting of six coaches. The estimated cost of each train is around ₹60 crore, putting the projected expenditure for the 10 trains at approximately ₹600 crore.
The exact cost of procurement will be determined after the tendering process is completed. The government is expected to invite bids shortly, following which the final cost and other details of the procurement will become clear.

Passenger Capacity Could Nearly Double

The high volume of passengers on this corridor has increased pressure on metro services, especially during office hours. The introduction of additional trains and increased coach capacity is expected to help address some of these operational challenges.
Daily Ridership May Increase to 6 Lakh
Hyderabad Metro currently records daily ridership of approximately 4.5 lakh passengers. With the introduction of additional trains and the expansion of carrying capacity, officials expect the number of daily commuters to potentially rise to around 6 lakh.
The anticipated increase in ridership highlights the growing importance of metro rail in Hyderabad’s urban transportation system. As the city continues to expand and traffic congestion increases, more residents are turning to public transport for faster and more reliable daily travel.
