Hyderabad, August 6: In a major welfare initiative aimed at strengthening food security and expanding access to government benefits, the Telangana Government has decided to launch the statewide distribution of 1.05 crore newly sanctioned and laminated Public Distribution System (PDS) ration cards on August 15, coinciding with the 79th Independence Day celebrations.
According to an official memorandum issued by the Office of the Minister for Irrigation, Food & Civil Supplies, the programme has received the approval of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The state-level inaugural event will be held in Sangareddy, from where the Chief Minister will formally launch the distribution of the new ration cards.
The government has planned a simultaneous rollout across all 119 Assembly constituencies, ensuring that eligible beneficiaries receive their ration cards in a coordinated and transparent manner. The programme will be supervised by designated Revenue Divisional Officers (RDOs), with support from district administrations and the Civil Supplies Department.
Citizen Welfare at the Core
The initiative has been designed with a strong focus on citizen convenience and efficient public service delivery. As per the official schedule, constituency-level distribution programmes will be conducted between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM on August 15, allowing Independence Day flag-hoisting ceremonies and other official events to conclude without affecting citizen participation.
Officials have been directed to ensure proper beneficiary verification, adequate seating arrangements, drinking water facilities, public address systems, signage, crowd management and smooth registration at every distribution centre. The government has also instructed departments to arrange sufficient manpower, documentation, photography and videography to ensure transparency throughout the programme.
Strengthening Citizens’ Rights Through New Ration Cards
Beyond being a document for subsidised food grains, the new ration cards are expected to reinforce the rights and entitlements of eligible families under Telangana’s Public Distribution System.
The issuance of newly sanctioned and laminated ration cards will enable eligible households to formally access government welfare programmes linked to food security. The initiative also reflects the government’s emphasis on ensuring that every eligible family is brought under the ambit of the Public Distribution System through a systematic and transparent process.
The official memorandum describes the programme as one of the state’s most significant welfare initiatives, aimed at extending the benefits of the Public Distribution System to all newly eligible families while strengthening food security across Telangana.
Administrative Preparedness
To ensure seamless implementation, the government has instructed officials to prioritise:
- Final verification of constituency-wise beneficiary lists.
- Printing, secure custody and timely transportation of ration cards.
- Coordination among local MLAs, District Collectors, Revenue Divisional Officers and other departments.
- Identification of suitable venues with adequate public facilities.
- Proper registration and orderly distribution to beneficiaries.
- Wide publicity to maximise public participation.
- Deployment of sufficient officers and staff.
- Submission of constituency-wise reports after completion of the programme, including distribution data and documentation.
Focus on Efficient Governance
The memorandum directs all concerned departments to complete preparations well in advance and ensure that the programme is conducted smoothly, efficiently and with dignity throughout the State.
With the launch scheduled on Independence Day, the Telangana Government seeks to combine a landmark welfare initiative with improved citizen service delivery, ensuring that eligible families receive access to the Public Distribution System through a structured, transparent and citizen-friendly distribution mechanism.
