Hyderabad: In a landmark step towards building a safer and more inclusive public transportation system, Hyderabad Metro Rail has inducted 20 transgender security personnel into its workforce, marking a significant milestone in gender inclusivity and social empowerment. The newly trained staff officially assumed duties across selected metro stations on December 1, 2025.
Hyderabad Metro Rail, known for being one of India’s most advanced and efficiently managed metro systems, operates three high-capacity corridors with 57 stations, catering to nearly five lakh passengers every day. Notably, women constitute nearly 30% of daily commuters, making passenger safety and a supportive travel environment a core operational priority.

A Bold Step Toward Equality & Opportunity
This development comes in alignment with the Telangana Government’s broader agenda to create equal employment opportunities for marginalized communities, particularly the transgender community, across public and essential services. The initiative reflects a transformative move towards dignity, recognition, and active participation in mainstream society.
The selected personnel underwent comprehensive security and public interaction training, preparing them for duties including:
- Baggage and scanner operations
- Assisting passengers during security checks
- Providing travel guidance and information support
- Handling crowd management during peak hours
- Monitoring safety at street-level, concourse-level, and platform-level checkpoints
- Deployment in both general and women-designated coaches
Enhancing Women’s Safety & Passenger Confidence
The presence of transgender staff members is expected to significantly boost the safety ecosystem across metro stations, particularly benefitting women travelers who often rely on public transport during late hours.
This initiative also aims to:
- Break long-standing societal barriers and stereotypes
- Promote inclusiveness in public spaces
- Enable dignified livelihood opportunities
- Strengthen community representation in formal service sectors
Speaking about the move, Metro Rail officials emphasized that the induction symbolizes “not just inclusive recruitment, but a powerful step towards reshaping public perception and encouraging acceptance.”
An Inspiration for Other Public Transport Systems
Hyderabad Metro Rail has consistently built a reputation for innovation, discipline, cleanliness, and commuter-focused services. The introduction of transgender staff showcases the city’s progressive and humanitarian approach—setting an example for other metro networks, government bodies, and private institutions nationwide.
The Metro administration reiterated its commitment to safe, efficient, and socially responsible mobility, stating that such initiatives will continue to be expanded in phases.
