Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday inaugurated the much-awaited Dr. Marri Chenna Reddy Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (Dr. MCR TIMS) at Sanathnagar in Hyderabad, marking a significant step towards strengthening the state’s public healthcare infrastructure and providing advanced medical treatment to people, particularly those from economically weaker sections.

After formally inaugurating the super-speciality hospital, the Chief Minister, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and ministers Damodar Rajanarsimha, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and Ponnam Prabhakar, inspected several blocks and departments of the facility.

During the inspection, Revanth Reddy reviewed the reception and patient registration facilities, including the functioning of the token dispenser machine and OP registration counters. He also visited the post-operative ward, trauma department, operation theatres, intensive care units and other specialised medical facilities. The Chief Minister interacted with doctors and nursing staff and enquired about the functioning of advanced medical equipment installed at the hospital.

He directed officials to ensure that there were no shortcomings in hospital management and that patients received quality medical care in an efficient and dignified manner.

Focus on Advanced Speciality and Organ Transplant Services

The Sanathnagar TIMS has been developed as a super-speciality healthcare facility with advanced infrastructure and specialised medical services. During his inspection, the Chief Minister particularly reviewed facilities related to cardiology, renal sciences and organ transplant sciences.

The inspection covered technologically advanced operation theatres, post-operative care facilities, trauma services and intensive care infrastructure. Revanth Reddy also stressed the importance of ensuring that the hospital’s sophisticated equipment and facilities translate into accessible and effective treatment for ordinary citizens.

The inauguration comes against the backdrop of the Telangana government’s stated focus on expanding government healthcare facilities and reducing the financial burden of expensive private medical treatment.

“Corporate-Level Healthcare for the Poor”

Addressing the inauguration programme, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said that the public government had accorded high priority to agriculture, women’s welfare, education and healthcare.

He said private healthcare had become increasingly expensive and that the government’s objective was to make corporate-level medical treatment available to poor and middle-class families through institutions such as TIMS.

According to figures cited by the Chief Minister, the government had spent ₹2,700 crore on Aarogyasri since coming to power and ₹2,526 crore through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF). He said a total of ₹5,226 crore had consequently been spent on the health needs of poor people.

Revanth Reddy further stated that the government had spent around ₹21,800 crore on the Medical and Health Department over the past two years, underlining what he described as the administration’s commitment to strengthening public healthcare.

Four Major Hospitals Targeted for Completion

The Chief Minister also spoke about the government’s plans to complete several major healthcare projects across Telangana.

Referring to the Osmania General Hospital, LB Nagar TIMS, Alwal TIMS and the Warangal hospital project, Revanth Reddy said his government had taken steps to complete projects that, according to him, had remained unfinished for years.

He announced that the government intends to complete Osmania, LB Nagar, Alwal and Warangal hospitals by December 9, 2027. Once these projects are completed, he said, Telangana would have around 10,000 additional hospital beds across these major institutions.

The Chief Minister said each hospital would have a dedicated director responsible for supervision and management. He also stressed that the hospitals should be managed on corporate lines while continuing to function as public institutions accessible to people who cannot afford expensive private treatment.

Facilities for Patient Attendants

Revanth Reddy also said the government would provide funds for facilities required by attendants accompanying patients to government hospitals.

He emphasised that healthcare infrastructure should not be limited to doctors, medical equipment and hospital beds alone, but should also take into consideration the basic needs of families accompanying patients.

The Chief Minister further called for measures to incentivise super-speciality doctors who spend additional time providing services in government hospitals. According to him, such measures would help attract and retain specialised medical professionals in the public healthcare system.

Emphasis on Nursing and Global Opportunities

The Chief Minister also spoke about the importance of quality education and skill development in the healthcare sector. He said the government wanted Telangana’s children to achieve the highest standards globally and was taking steps to provide quality education.

Referring specifically to nursing education, Revanth Reddy said nursing students had significant employment opportunities in countries such as Germany and Japan, highlighting the potential for Telangana’s trained healthcare workforce to access international opportunities.

Political Attack on Previous Government

The inauguration speech also turned political, with Revanth Reddy sharply criticising the previous BRS government over delays in completing major healthcare projects.

The Chief Minister alleged that the previous government had laid the foundation for TIMS hospitals and the Warangal hospital but failed to complete them during its decade in power. He questioned why projects allegedly initiated by the previous administration had not been completed and inaugurated earlier.

He also took a direct political swipe at former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao and former minister K. T. Rama Rao over their claims concerning the construction of TIMS facilities. Revanth Reddy alleged that the previous leadership had focused on other priorities while public healthcare projects remained incomplete.

His remarks triggered a strong political tone at an otherwise healthcare-focused inauguration programme. Revanth Reddy challenged the opposition to undertake constructive public service instead of relying on what he described as “false propaganda.”

He said that if opposition leaders spent ₹10–20 crore in each constituency on public service, it could help address people’s needs, while claiming that the public would not accept what he characterised as misleading political campaigns.

“Give People Confidence in Public Healthcare”

Concluding his address, Revanth Reddy urged doctors, officials and the healthcare administration to ensure that poor families could approach government hospitals with confidence.

He said the government should create an environment where people believe that the public healthcare system and the government stand behind them when they need medical treatment.

The Sanathnagar TIMS inauguration therefore represents more than the opening of another hospital in Hyderabad. The government is positioning the institution as a major pillar of its strategy to expand advanced public healthcare, reduce dependence on costly private treatment and build a network of large government hospitals across Telangana.

With Sanathnagar TIMS now operational and the government setting a December 2027 target for several other major hospitals, the coming years will determine how effectively Telangana can translate its ambitious healthcare plans into accessible, affordable and high-quality medical services for its citizens.
