Hyderabad; 10 August, The Telangana government on Monday conducted a grand Maha Varuna Yagam at Nagarjuna Sagar, invoking divine blessings for abundant rainfall, the prosperity of farmers and the overall well-being of the people of the state.
The sacred ritual was held on the banks of the Krishna River at Vijay Vihar in Nagarjuna Sagar amid Vedic chants, traditional rituals and a deeply spiritual atmosphere. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, along with his wife, participated in the yagam and performed the prescribed rituals under the guidance of the Ritwiks. The Chief Minister also offered the Purnahuti, marking the completion of the elaborate Vedic ceremony.
The Maha Varuna Yagam was conducted under the leadership of priests and Vedic scholars from the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple at Yadadri. As many as 108 Ritwiks participated in the ceremony, with 11 Homakundas being used to perform the sacred fire rituals dedicated to Varuna Deva, the deity traditionally associated with rain and water.
Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and his wife also participated in the sacred ceremony.
During the yagam, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy prayed for widespread and timely rainfall across Telangana, particularly in the Krishna and Godavari river basins. He expressed hope that the major reservoirs and irrigation projects in the state would receive abundant inflows and that every lake, tank and water body would be replenished.
The Chief Minister also prayed for a rise in groundwater levels, bumper agricultural production and prosperity for farmers. He wished that Telangana would remain green and fertile and that people across the state would lead healthy, peaceful and prosperous lives.
“May the state receive abundant rainfall. May the Krishna and Godavari rivers flow to their full capacity. May all projects, including Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar, be filled to the brim. May every lake and pond in the state be filled with water. Groundwater levels should rise, crops should flourish and smiles should return to the faces of farmers,” the Chief Minister prayed.
He further expressed the wish that Telangana should remain prosperous and green, with all its people enjoying good health, happiness and well-being.
The government said the conduct of the Varuna Yagam reflects a longstanding Indian spiritual tradition of praying for rainfall through yagnas, yajnas and other religious rituals. While the government continues to rely on scientific assessments, weather forecasts and planned measures to manage water resources and agricultural needs, it also seeks to respect cultural traditions that recognise the close relationship between rainfall, agriculture, nature and human life.
The yagam comes against the backdrop of concerns over rainfall patterns in the state. According to the weather-related assessment cited by the government, the influence of El Niño could contribute to below-normal rainfall in Telangana during the season. Against this backdrop, the government organised the Maha Varuna Yagam seeking divine blessings for adequate rainfall and water availability.
The ceremony was attended by Telangana Legislative Council Chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy, Ministers Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and Konda Surekha, government advisers K. Keshava Rao and P. Sudarshan Reddy, former minister K. Jana Reddy and several other public representatives.
The government hopes that adequate rainfall will strengthen irrigation resources, improve groundwater availability, support agricultural activity and contribute to the economic well-being of farmers and people across Telangana.
The Maha Varuna Yagam at Nagarjuna Sagar thus combined a traditional spiritual appeal for rain with the government’s broader focus on water security, agriculture and the prosperity of the state.
