Hyderabad, July 29: North Telangana is on high alert as a strengthening core depression over central India is expected to trigger extremely heavy rainfall across several districts over the next 36 hours, raising fears of flash floods, overflowing rivers, and widespread disruption to normal life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the weather system could dump exceptionally heavy rainfall in isolated places, prompting district administrations to activate emergency response mechanisms.
According to meteorological officials, the active monsoon system has intensified into a core depression and is moving inland after drawing moisture from the Bay of Bengal. As the system progresses northwestward, it is expected to influence weather conditions across northern Telangana, particularly in districts such as Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Nirmal, Mancherial, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jagtial, and surrounding regions.
The IMD has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Low-lying areas are especially vulnerable to waterlogging, while streams, rivulets, and smaller rivers may witness sudden rises in water levels. Authorities have cautioned residents living near reservoirs and riverbanks to remain alert and follow official advisories.
The state government has instructed district collectors, disaster response teams, and local civic bodies to remain on standby. Emergency personnel have been deployed in vulnerable locations, while irrigation officials are closely monitoring reservoir inflows to ensure safe water management. Control rooms have also been activated to respond quickly to emergencies arising from flooding or landslides.
Officials have appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. People living in flood-prone villages have been advised to identify safe shelters in advance and stay connected with local authorities. Farmers have also been urged to take precautions to protect standing crops and livestock from possible inundation.
Although Hyderabad is not expected to receive the same intensity of rainfall as northern districts, the city is likely to continue witnessing intermittent heavy showers over the coming days. Tuesday’s rainfall already caused severe traffic congestion, waterlogging, and disruption of daily life in several parts of the city, highlighting the pressure that continuous monsoon activity can place on urban infrastructure.
Meteorologists note that while monsoon depressions are common during this season, a well-organized core depression carries significantly more moisture and can sustain prolonged periods of heavy rainfall over a large geographical area. Such systems often lead to localized flooding even if rivers remain below danger levels, especially in areas with poor drainage or encroachments on natural water channels.
Disaster management experts have stressed that preparedness during the next two days will be crucial. Past monsoon events in Telangana have shown that intense rainfall over a short duration can disrupt transportation networks, damage crops, interrupt power supply, and isolate remote villages. Authorities are therefore emphasizing preventive measures rather than waiting for floodwaters to rise.
The IMD has advised citizens to avoid crossing overflowing streams, refrain from driving through waterlogged roads, and stay indoors during thunderstorms. Fishermen have also been cautioned against venturing into water bodies where weather conditions deteriorate rapidly. Residents are encouraged to monitor official weather bulletins and district administration updates instead of relying on unverified social media messages.
With the next 36 hours considered critical, the focus remains on minimizing risks to life and property. While the full impact of the depression will depend on its movement and intensity, officials say early preparedness, public cooperation, and timely dissemination of information will play a vital role in mitigating the effects of the expected heavy rainfall across North Telangana.
