Bhadrachalam, Telangana: In a remarkable display of medical expertise and swift action, doctors at Bhadrachalam Government Hospital successfully performed a rare and life-saving surgery on an 8-year-old boy who had accidentally swallowed a 6 cm screwdriver drill-bit nail.

The young patient, Master Thummala Goutham, had swallowed the metallic object three days prior to being brought to the hospital. Initially, the medical team closely monitored his condition, hoping that the foreign object would naturally pass through the digestive tract without causing harm. However, when the boy began experiencing severe abdominal pain, doctors quickly realized that surgical intervention was the only option to prevent further complications.

During the surgery, the team carefully retrieved the sharp object from the sigmoid loop of the large intestine, where it had become lodged. The procedure required precision and skill to avoid damaging surrounding tissues. Thanks to the timely intervention, the child was successfully relieved of the dangerous obstruction and is now recovering well under close medical supervision.

Surgery Led by Dedicated Team

The complex surgery was spearheaded by Dr. M. Ramakrishna, a senior surgeon at Bhadrachalam Government Hospital. He was ably supported by Dr. Nikitha and Dr. Mallesh from the anesthesia team, whose expertise ensured that the child remained stable throughout the delicate procedure.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Ramakrishna said:
“It was a challenging situation given the nature of the foreign body and its location. Any delay could have led to life-threatening complications such as intestinal perforation or sepsis. We are relieved and happy that the surgery was successful, and the child is now safe.”

Part of Telangana Government’s Initiative to Strengthen Public Healthcare

This successful surgery reflects the Telangana government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure and make advanced medical treatments accessible to people in rural and semi-urban areas.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, significant investments have been made to upgrade facilities in government hospitals, provide modern equipment, and ensure the availability of skilled medical professionals.

“This case is a clear example of why strengthening government hospitals is essential,” said a health department official. “Such interventions not only save lives but also build trust in the public healthcare system.”

Raising Awareness on Child Safety

Doctors also urged parents and caregivers to be vigilant about children’s safety at home. Small objects, especially sharp metallic items, pose serious risks when accidentally swallowed. Immediate medical attention is crucial in such cases.

Dr. Nikitha added, “Parents should never ignore symptoms like sudden stomach pain, vomiting, or discomfort in children, especially if there’s a possibility of them ingesting a foreign object. Early detection can prevent severe complications.”

A Testament to Teamwork and Compassion

The successful outcome of this surgery not only highlights the skill and dedication of the doctors involved but also reinforces the importance of teamwork and quick decision-making in emergency situations.

A true example of skill, compassion, and public healthcare at its best, this case shines as a beacon of hope for families across Telangana.
