Hyderabad, Telangana – In a celebration of Telangana’s rich cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship, the BC Welfare Department of Telangana has brought the iconic Ranjans – earthen water pots made from the unique red clay of Adilabad – to the heart of Hyderabad, at Shilparamam.
This initiative, spearheaded by the department in collaboration with the Telangana State Kummari Association, aims to support local artisans and promote sustainable, healthy living.
Ranjans – Where Nature Meets Function
In Telangana, when one hears the word Ranjan, the first name that comes to mind is Adilabad. And for good reason — the Ranjans crafted here by the skilled Kummari (potter) community are renowned across the state for their cooling properties and water purification qualities.
What makes these earthen pots special?
- The natural red clay found in Adilabad has high mineral content and filtration properties, making it ideal for storing drinking water.
- Water stored in these Ranjans remains naturally cool, fresh, and free from impurities — without electricity or refrigeration.
- The taste and health benefits are far superior to plastic or metal containers.
While potters across united Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Warangal, and Ranga Reddy districts also make similar vessels, none match the finesse and quality of Adilabad Ranjans.

A Special Stall at Shilparamam
As part of its artisan welfare program, the Telangana BC Welfare Department has facilitated a dedicated stall at Shilparamam Handicrafts Village, where Ranjans handcrafted by Adilabad Kummari artisans are being showcased and sold directly to the public.
Thanks to the leadership and efforts of Sri Kummari Balakrishna Prajapati, President of the Telangana State Kummari Association, this initiative not only promotes rural craftsmanship but also ensures that these artisans receive fair earnings and due recognition.
The entire stall is being maintained and managed under the guidance of the BC Welfare Department, reflecting the government’s continued support toward preserving traditional occupations and empowering backward communities.

A Salute to the Government’s Support
Speaking on behalf of the artisan community, Sri Balakrishna Prajapati extended special thanks to the Government of Telangana, stating that such efforts not only preserve a centuries-old art form but also improve livelihoods for marginalized communities.
Why Every Home Needs an Adilabad Ranjan
In an age where plastic rules and machines filter water, this simple, sustainable, eco-friendly clay pot stands as a symbol of health, tradition, and environmental responsibility. With summer peaking, these Ranjans offer a natural way to keep water cool and pure — and they’re beautiful to look at too!
By buying an Adilabad Ranjan, you’re not just purchasing a water pot — you’re preserving culture, promoting health, and supporting rural livelihoods.
