Hyderabad, March 18: In a groundbreaking move to revolutionize healthcare, Continental Hospitals in Hyderabad has integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its cancer detection processes. This innovative approach aims to improve early diagnosis rates and save countless lives by identifying cancer in its earliest stages.
Global Collaboration for Advanced Cancer Detection
The initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between Continental Hospitals and leading global institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Mayo Clinic, and prominent research centres in the Netherlands. The focus is on detecting high-risk cancers like breast, lung, and pancreatic cancer before they progress to advanced stages.
Since the adoption of this AI-driven approach, the hospital has successfully screened over 1,500 patients using AI-powered mammography and chest nodule detection technologies.
Dr. Guru N. Reddy, founder and chairman of Continental Hospitals, emphasized the financial impact of early detection:
“Early-stage cancer treatment in India costs around ₹5 lakh, while in advanced stages, expenses can exceed ₹25 lakh. Even though India’s healthcare costs are lower than those in countries like the United States, the financial burden remains significant for families.”
How AI Enhances Cancer Detection
Continental Hospitals employs two FDA-approved AI algorithms to enhance diagnostic accuracy and streamline processes.
Dr. Ruju Doshi, Senior Consultant Radiologist, explained their functionality:
“The first algorithm, developed in the Netherlands, specializes in detecting breast cancer, while the second algorithm, developed by MIT, predicts a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer within five years. During a mammogram, the AI system instantly classifies the risk level as low, intermediate, or elevated, enabling immediate follow-up imaging if necessary. This accelerates diagnosis and reduces the need for multiple hospital visits.”
Dr. Suhasini Devi P., Senior Consultant in Radiology, further highlighted AI’s impact on efficiency:
“A single CT scan produces hundreds of images, overwhelming radiologists. AI effectively manages routine evaluations, enhances image clarity with 3D rendering, and suggests potential diagnoses, ensuring faster and more accurate results.”
Revolutionizing Cancer Care with Technology
This AI-driven initiative is poised to redefine cancer diagnostics in India. By accelerating detection and ensuring timely intervention, Continental Hospitals is enhancing patient outcomes and setting a new standard for innovative healthcare solutions.
