Hyderabad, December 4: In a landmark move expected to reshape India’s technological future, the Telangana government on Thursday unveiled the country’s first-ever Long-Term Quantum Technology Strategy, alongside an ambitious plan to develop Hyderabad into “Quantum City,” a global epicentre for quantum computing and advanced deep-tech innovation.
The NITI Aayog Roadmap for Quantum and the Telangana Quantum Strategy were formally released at the International Institute of Information Technology–Hyderabad (IIIT-H), Gachibowli, by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, in the presence of IT & Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu and top national policymakers, academicians, and industry leaders.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Sridhar Babu said quantum technology had the potential to transform global industry and scientific progress as profoundly as electricity and the internet did in previous centuries. He noted that Telangana is committed to building a strong research-driven innovation ecosystem to position itself as a global powerhouse in emerging technologies such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and life sciences.
Key Announcements & Strategic Focus
The newly unveiled strategy focuses on:
- Strengthening national-grade research infrastructure
- Accelerating innovation in quantum computing, communication, sensing & cryptography
- Developing high-end talent and academic excellence
- Enhancing cybersecurity and future-ready digital systems
- Building strong industry-academic-research collaboration
As part of the initiative, the State will establish a Centre of Excellence in Quantum Technologies, envisioned as a national benchmark for advanced research, product testing, and next-generation talent grooming. The centre will also engage global experts and international research institutions through collaborative programmes.
Announcing strong financial support for deep-tech innovation, the Minister revealed that the government will introduce a Fund of Funds starting next financial year to empower startups, R&D enterprises, and frontier technology ventures in quantum, semiconductors, and scientific hardware.
Industry-Government Collaboration
To ensure seamless industry engagement, Telangana will institutionalise ‘Industry Day’, enabling:
- Weekly structured interactions between officials and industry representatives
- Monthly meetings between Ministers and business leaders to resolve regulatory challenges and co-create growth strategies
The launch event was attended by NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, Member Dr. V.K. Saraswat, NASSCOM Past President Debjani Ghosh, Special Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar, along with senior bureaucrats, academic leaders, startup founders and technology innovators.
With the initiative, Telangana has become the first state in India to release a long-term quantum roadmap, reinforcing its vision to establish Hyderabad as a globally competitive innovation economy and a future leader in advanced science and technology.
